Department History

The Carter Lake Fire & EMS Department was formed in 1956. The original fire station was located on Ninth Street, 1 block south of Locust. In January of 1974, a devastating fire took place in which all of our trucks, gear, records, and station burned. In August of 1975, our current station was completed. We added a full time Fire Coordinator (Paramedic/FF) in 2010, who works Monday-Friday (7 am-3 pm). Today we average 25-35 active volunteers and 1 paid member and answer 450-500 emergency calls a year.

From Our Families to Yours, We Welcome You to Carter Lake, Iowa

How To Become a Member

We are actively recruiting new members to join our organization. Department brochures and applications are available at City Hall Monday Friday. Return the application to City Hall or call the station at (712) 347-5900, and the Fire Chief, Fire Coordinator, or another officer will meet with you.

Monthly Meetings / Trainings

Scheduled monthly are:

  • A general meeting-the first Tuesday of each month (7:30pm).
  • Fire trainings-the first Saturday (9 am-noon) and the second Tuesday (7-10 pm) of each month.
  • An EMS meeting and training-the third Tuesday (7-10 pm) of each month.

Smoke-Eaters Activities

The Carter Lake Fire Department Smoke-Eaters schedule:

  • Pancake breakfasts that are held the 1st Sunday of February, May, and October at the station from 7:30 am-12:30 pm.
  • An annual Boot Drive to benefit a chosen charity and our Smoke-Eaters in the spring and/or fall.
  • Community fire safety and station tours,
  • First aid and CPR classes as needed.
  • Open House/Fire Safety each fall at the fire station.
  • Fireworks to culminate the Carter Lake Community Day Parade and Festival.
  • Other community events as advertised and posted.

Smokettes Auxiliary

We are, also, actively recruiting members for our auxiliary. If fighting fires or answering ambulance calls is just not your thing, then this is still a great way to be involved with our fire department and the community. The auxiliary assists the department by providing meals, drinks, etc. at calls, meetings, or other functions. They meet monthly or as needed.
